Magnets attract certain materials. A material that is attracted to a magnet is considered
magnetic.
Some metals, such as iron and nickel, are magnetic. Other metals, such as copper and aluminum, are nonmagnetic. Most nonmetals are also nonmagnetic.
A large magnet on a crane is used to attract scrap metal from a distance.
When an object is attracted to a magnet, it experiences a magnetic force. Magnetic forces can act at a distance. In fact, some large magnets can attract magnetic objects from several feet away.
